Translation memory (CAT)

A translation memory is a database of previously translated text segments that CAT (computer-assisted translation) tools reuse. When an identical or similar phrase comes up, the memory proposes the translation that has already been validated.

What it helps with

The memory ensures consistent terminology across long documents or series of papers: the same term is translated the same way every time. It also reduces working time, because repetitive text is not translated from scratch.

When it matters most

It is useful above all for recurring or periodically updated documents, for contracts with standard clauses, and for large projects, where several translators have to use the same terminology.
